With only two of the top 20 player in the world competing in the Mexico Open it ended up being those two players competing down the stretch for the title.
Tony Finau was able to outlast Jon Rahm and claim the title. In fact, Finau never gave Rahm any opportunity to get within three strokes of the lead on the final day. On Sunday, Finau carded a 5-under 66 at Vidanta Vallarta Golf Club.
Last year, it was Rahm who won and Finau who took second place. This year the tables were turned.
“He’s the best and he’s on top of the world right now and I knew I was going to have my hands full with him all the way to the end. It’s crazy how this game is, you never think you have a tournament won until it’s over.”

Finau is a true family man on the PGA tour. When his wife’s father passed away two years ago he decided to bring her and the entire family to every event he plays in. All five children are at every PGA event and can be seen walking along with him as he plays. On Sunday they got to stand on the green with him and his new trophy.
The final score of 24-under, secured his fourth win in 280 days, joining Rahm, Max Homa and Scottie Scheffler as multiple winners on Tour this season.

His first win in the 2023 season was the Cadence Houston Open in November. Since then, Finau has made the cut in all 10 starts this year but had just two top-10 finishes since his last win. Last season he had back-to-back wins at the 3M Open and The Rocket Mortgage Classic.
In the Netflix show “Full Swing” there was an entire episode dedicated to Finau and those two wins. In addition to that you get to see how he grew up in a huge family and practiced golf in his garage. It was rare that his family could afford to go to the driving range and purchase golf balls.
When you sum up everything he does week in and week out he’s just a working father supporting his family like so many other dads out there. His job may be a bit different but when you look at it closely, he’s just a regular guy who loves his family.
