Matt Fitzpatrick Wins the 2022 U.S. Open

After years of being the second-highest ranked golfer without a PGA Tour victory, Matt Fitzpatrick finally reached the pinnacle of the sport with his first major championship win at the 2022 U.S. Open. The tournament was held at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts, where Fitzpatrick clinched the title with a score of 6 under par after two birdies and no bogeys in the final seven holes.

Fitzpatrick faced a formidable challenge in the form of Will Zalatoris and Scottie Scheffler, the 2022 Masters champion, on the back nine. Despite the pressure of the US Open and the competition, Fitzpatrick remained composed, executing bold shots with precision to secure a key birdie on the fifth hole.

Despite a bogey on the tenth hole and a three-putt on the eleventh, Fitzpatrick managed to catch up to Zalatoris with a 50-foot birdie bomb on the 13th hole and a 220-yard 5-iron shot from off the fairway on the 15th hole, which resulted in a two-shot swing in his favor.

He capped off his steady play all week with a final round 2 under par 68 to secure the U.S. Open Championship Trophy. But most impressive element to his game was his accuracy on Sunday. Fitzpatrick hit 17 of 18 greens at Brookline on Sunday, only the third player in the last 30 years to do so in the final round of a major win.

“No words,” Fitzpatrick said after hoisting the trophy. “It’s what you grow up dreaming of. It’s something I’ve worked so hard for — for such a long time — it was a big monkey on my back trying to win [in the United States]. That’s all everyone talked about was that. To do it with a major for my first win, there’s nothing better.”

Having previously won the 2013 U.S. Amateur at The Country Club, Fitzpatrick added to his USGA total in dramatic fashion with a victory at the 122nd U.S. Open
