Patrick Cantlay wins the BMW Championship 2022

Patrick Cantlay made history by winning the BMW Championship back-to-back, becoming the first player to successfully defend a title at a FedEx Cup Playoffs event. He joins an elite group of players who have defended their titles on the season, with five players doing so, the most since 2007.

As the 2021 FedEx Cup Champion, Cantlay moved up to the second spot in the FedEx Cup standings heading into the Tour Championship. Meanwhile, World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler regained the top position with a T3 finish. Additionally, four players who were outside the top 30 in the standings qualified for the Tour Championship: Scott Stallings (2nd), K.H. Lee (T5), Adam Scott (T5) and Aaron Wise (T15).

Unfortunately, FedEx Cup leader Will Zalatoris had to withdraw during the third round due to a back injury and fell to No. 3 in the standings heading into the Tour Championship.

On Sunday, Patrick Cantlay secured a one-shot victory, taking home the FedEx Cup and $15 million prize. Cantlay made a nervy 6-foot bogey putt on the 17th hole to maintain his lead over Jon Rahm, and then hit a 361-yard drive down the middle of the fairway on the 18th hole.

He followed this up with a 6-iron from 218 yards, landing 12 feet from the hole, which all but secured his win. Cantlay’s consistency throughout the year, coupled with his ability to perform under pressure, earned him the nickname “Patty Ice.”
