Rory McIlroy Wins the 2022 RBC Canadian Open

On Sunday, Rory McIlroy emerged victorious at the RBC Canadian Open, winning in a close race with Justin Thomas and Tony Finau. McIlroy closed with an 8-under 62 and secured his first title defense on the PGA Tour.

This win comes as a response to the start of the Saudi-funded LIV Golf Invitational. McIlroy previously won the tournament in 2019 at Hamilton Golf & Country Club, but the next two editions were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Justin Thomas put up a strong fight, pushing McIlroy to the end at St. George’s Golf & Country Club. The tournament ultimately came down to the 17th hole, where McIlroy and Thomas were tied and in the rough. McIlroy hit a wedge that rolled out to tap-in range, while Thomas missed a 10-foot par putt, resulting in a two-shot swing. Thomas closed with a pair of bogeys, but still managed to shoot a 64.

“It’s incredible,” McIlroy said. “Playing with Tony and JT, and all of us playing the way we did, I think the worst round was 6 under, this is a day I will always remember. My 21st PGA Tour win, one more than somebody else, that gave me a little extra incentive today and I’m happy to get it done.”

The galleries in Canada were filled with excitement as fans cheered and chanted for their favorite players during the week of live golf action. After two years of silence due to COVID-19, the fans were thrilled to be back at the course. The highlight of the event was when thousands of fans gathered around the 18th green, filling the fairway for 50 yards.
