Victory at The Players Championship Launches Scottie Scheffler to #1 World Ranking

In what seems to be an ongoing back and forth for the number one ranked player in golf, Scottie Scheffler overtook Jon Rahm to reclaim the title. Rahm has won three times in 2023 and Scheffler has now claimed two titles.

Scheffler was dominate in his performance over the weekend at The Players Championship. On Saturday he shot a seven under 65 giving him a three-shot lead going into Sunday’s round. On Sunday there was little anyone could do to put any pressure on him.

Early in the day Hideki Matsuyama put up the best effort getting within 2 strokes of Scheffler at 12 under. That was a short-lived effort as he double bogeyed the 14th hole. Meanwhile, Scheffler caught fire on the 8th hole and posted five straight birdies to seal his spot as The Players Champion and number one in the world golf rankings.

“Long day, tough day. I knew the conditions were going to get really tough late, and I did a really good job of staying patient, not trying to force things, and then I got hot kind of in the middle of the round. I tried to put things away as quickly as I could”

Notable Rounds

Tyrrell Hatton came in second at 12 under par and posted a final back nine score of seven under par for of 29. That final score and second place earned him a cool 2.7 million.

Tom Hoge set a new course record on 10 under par on Saturday for a 62. On Sunday he could only get to two under, but that Saturday round was enough to get him into a tie for third with Victor Hovland. For the third-place tie both earned 1.4 million.

“I didn’t even know it was a course record until after we got done in the scoring there”
